Milford Sound is the eighth wonder, Rudyard Kipling called it — a fjord of sheer black cliffs plunging into dark water, ringed by peaks and hung with waterfalls that appear and vanish with the rain. The road in, through the Homer Tunnel, is an adventure in itself, and the boat out to the Tasman Sea is unforgettable.
With children, drive in slowly, stop at the Mirror Lakes, take a small boat to the base of Stirling Falls, and watch for dolphins and fur seals. Stay a night in Te Anau rather than rushing from Queenstown.

The drive through the Homer Tunnel
A 1.2-km bore through the mountains, emerging to the fjord below — keep an eye out for kea parrots.
The Mirror Lakes
A quick roadside stop on the way in — still water reflecting the peaks, and a perfect children’s photo.
Hidden gem
Doubtful Sound
Milford gets the crowds, but its larger, quieter sister Doubtful Sound — reachable only by boat across Lake Manapouri and a bus over a mountain pass — is the fjord the locals keep for themselves. A day or overnight cruise here means dolphins riding the bow, waterfalls around every bend, and often no other vessel in sight. The silence, when the engines cut, is something you do not forget.
