Marrakech

Riads, souks and the roar of Jemaa el-Fnaa

Best time

March – May & October – November

Gentle pace

3–5 slow days

Ideal for

First-time Morocco · Families · Food lovers

Marrakech is a city of colour and noise and extraordinary kindness — a walled medina of souks and gardens, dominated by the great square of Jemaa el-Fnaa, where storytellers, snake charmers and food stalls gather each evening. Behind the walls, calm riads hide behind unassuming doors, their courtyards cool and green.

With children, balance the intensity: a morning in the souks, an afternoon in a garden, an evening on a rooftop watching the square light up. Stay in a riad with a pool, eat where the families eat, and let the city’s warmth carry you.

Worth lingering over

01

Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk

The square transforms each evening into a vast open-air kitchen and theatre — wander, graze, and let the children watch the drummers.

02

The souks

A maze of lanterns, leather, spices and rugs — go with a loose list and no rush, and accept the mint tea.

03

Le Jardin Majorelle

Yves Saint Laurent’s cobalt-blue garden of cacti and bamboo — a cool, quiet hour away from the dust.

Hidden gem

Le Jardin Secret

Hidden behind a high wall in the heart of the medina, two minutes from the souks, lies a pair of walled gardens — one Islamic, one exotic — built around a traditional riad, with a tower you can climb for a view over the rooftops. Step through the door and the roar of the medina falls away; it is the most peaceful hour you will spend in Marrakech, and almost no visitor finds it.
